Aapke sur mein gadbad hai, she said.

So, I saw the Phir Mile Sur video that everyone has been ranting against. And I feel their pain. I had to pause it and barf the moment Abhiash - or whatever they hell they're called - came on. Fifteen minutes later, I was ready to continue. Only to repeat my performance when Deepika Padukone appears in what could easily pass of as a negligee and then proceeds to get wet in the rain. All in a video dedicated to my wonderful country.

I would rip it apart myself, but my friend seems to have done a wonderful job of it already. Read her post here.

In a nutshell, I am insulted by this video. Well-intentioned as it may be, Zoom seems to have the basics all wrong. Last time I checked:
  • India was more than cinema, Bollywood or otherwise.
  • Anoushka Shankar was a British national who lives in the United States, not an Indian.
  • The northeastern states were just as much a part of India as Punjab, Kerala or Delhi.
You would expect that a video of this sort would focus just a wee bit more on the last 1.5 minutes - you know, the part where they hint at our army, navy, sportspersons. The things that the video should have actually been based on. Example: the original, and wonderful, Mile Sur video I grew up on. Classic.

I want to know why we didn't have people from politics, literature, art and science. Or were they going to spoil Zoom's pathetic attempt at a glam national anthem? I'm all for reinventing the old, making it new again, giving it a fresh tweak. But not at the cost of its essence. And not at the cost of ending up with a cheap attempt at nationalism. Zoom has messed up. Big, big time. This was not a nice Republic Day watch, to say the least. First, I miss the parade. And then, I watch this. Awesome.

But anyhow, after the rant that was not supposed to be, I am going to try calming down. Even though, as Ra put it, a little piece of my childhood has died.

I think I'll go drown my sorrows in A. R. Rahman's timeless patriotism.

Happy Republic Day. I guess.

Yup. I missed the diversity as depicted in the old one.

And my thoughts on Deepika have been expressed already. However, since this has been - globally - a year of awarding/rewarding non-achievers for no reason at all, I am not surprised she is in that video. (So it's not 2009 anymore, but let's consider the financial year, yes?)

In that sense, this makes me feel good about not being in India right now and having to watch this on my television. Now, that is a mean achievement for the video given my perpetual homesickness. And my memory doesn't feel as desecrated as it might have felt had I discovered this crapola all by myself without first having read enough antagonistic reactions to it.

The only bit of it I liked was Ustad Amjad Ali Khan against the backdrop of the Jama Masjid.

Thank you for linking in! :)

Although I sometimes wonder if we're being overly harsh - I hated it when A R Rehman came out with his version of the national anthem too. The anthem, in my book, is supposed to be 52 seconds, and we stand when it plays. How d'you do that if it's coming on the TV channels every five minutes?!?

I get very possessive about nostalgia. :-|

hahahha.... luckily i was so engrossed in watching the parade i didnt see the mile sur (the new version) ...
i have been an ardent fan of the older one..its very close to our hearts..all of us who have grown up listening to that....
i some how had a gut feeling that a channel so obsessed with bollywood cnt do much justice to a legendary song like that,so i happen to miss it...
honestly speaking, we really need a wake up call to these damn people who think we really need an "abhiash" crap or a heart broken deepika padukone or some non indian to tell us about being Indian...
Old is Gold! preserve it people!!! dnt ruin it!

I totally agree with you on this, which doesn't surprise me because the easier way out is to agree with you.

But I'd like to add that Juhi Chawla looks absolutely amazing in the video. And that Deepika has to have the best pelvic bones in the history of mankind.

Right.

You may push me off the ledge now.

Just so you know, I saw the entire video, could not find Deepika, went on to part two, saw that, couldn't find her even then.

Later someone pointed her out to me. She's not naked darn it!
Waste of bandwidth! :P

Hi!! I got here through Mr. Bald Guy. I totally agree with you on this one. It is always good to move forward. But at the cost of our nationality- No which ways.
I have also grown up watching the old video. And, that video is not even shown on any of the channels except on DD, sometimes.
You know,on the point of Anoushka Shankar- I wanna add:
We in India are proud of ANYONE who has any sort of Indian roots. We are one nation, who can sideline our own hockey team but will be very proud of the 'guy of the indian origin' making into the national cricket team of England.

Like- I say- The day Indians become proud of the very heritage that makes it so special- We are going to surpass everyone.

I agree, they could have done a much better job of it. There's too much Bollywood, and too many silly expressioned actresses lip synching away, and too little sportsmen relegated to the fag end of the 16 minute long epic.

There's many flaws..but somewhere i did enjoy it a little. It's not great, but not horrible either.

Oh, and i watched the entire parade. It was pretty awesome :P

It was funneeeeee! Which is why I loved it. Especially that bit where there is mist-rain-waterfallish thing on Deepika Padukone's face and you're thinking, 'Give her the soap, damnit!'
